William Powell and Myrna Loy in “Nuts to Will Hays” – An eight page Tijuana Bible from the 1930s.
William Powell and Myrna Loy starred in 13 movies together in the 1930s and ’40s. Their frequent pairing – always playing a couple – and on-screen chemistry, especially in their six popular Thin Man films, where they played husband and wife Nick and Nora Charles, led many fans to believe they were married in real life. However, they were only good friends.
In this Tijuana Bible, Powell decides he wants some of the same benefits as real married couples and Loy agrees.
Will H. Hays was the president of the Motion Picture Producers and Distributors of America (MPPDA) from 1922 to 1945. He was responsible for the Motion Picture Production Code, known as the Hays Code. It was a set of industry guidelines for the self-censorship of content that was applied to most United States motion pictures released by major studios from 1934 to 1968.
