He might even ask for spousal support as well… I suggest that you discuss it with your husband and make an agreement. That way, you’ll lose half, but there’ll be no fee to pay and those fees usually eat twenty to thirty per cent of the estate. It’s the only way to come out on top. Believe me!’

‘What if I had grounds for irretrievable breakdown?’

‘He’d have to be beating you, have an affair or some such. Even if it were true that doesn’t stop him from claiming against your estate, even if it makes him more likely to lose. You would still be paying for both sides to go to court and believe me it will cost a lot. What am I saying? ‘I’ll think of something, Eric.’

‘No you won’t! Discuss it with Pete, get a decree to separate your finances, get the divorce and go your own way, you’ll soon catch up on the money side.’
