In 1905 Édouard-Henri Avril, known as Paul Avril created illustrations for the book Un été à la campagne: correspondance de deux jeunes parisiennes, recueillie par un auteur à la mode (A Summer in the Countryside: The Correspondence of Two Young Parisiennes, Collected by a Fashionable Author).
The story is a set of two young ladies corresponding with each other over the summer vacation from school. They reveal a variety of secrets as they both separately and together pursue their budding interests in sex.
The text is by Antoine Gustave Droz (1832–95), and it was published in Paris in 1868. This portfolio includes the frontispiece and eight other illustrations.
Édouard-Henri Avril (1849–1928) used the pseudonym Paul Avril to produce his exquisitely rendered erotica. He studied at the prestigious École des Beaux-Arts and first began exhibiting in 1878.
