Part One

Chapter 1 – Start

He stared at the kitten and felt an excitement that filled him so full that he was ready to burst. Helpless, its tiny tail held up, its cute little face an expression of innocence as it stumbled from one side of the cage to where his face almost touched the bars.

‘Aw, please, please, please can I have a kitten? A cute kitty to play with…’

His mother looked down at him with an expression of intense frustration.

‘It’s a tomcat, silly boy. Why on earth would you want a smelly thing like that? They piss up the walls, piss on the furniture and need looking after all of the time.’

‘I just want something for my very own,’ said Justin. ‘It’s just a kitten! That’s all I want to do, own it and train it!’

‘Kittens grow to be cats; puppies grow to be dogs and little boys grow up to be men. When you are a grown man, you can do exactly what you like. Right now, we are here to get some rat poison and I really don’t want to get into a silly discussion about getting a kitten.’ There was a thin smile on her lips before she framed a final question. ‘Anyway, what would you do with a kitten?’

Justin looked up and smiled.
‘Train it to do tricks, Mummy. Teach it to be obedient…’
‘Dogs do tricks, cats can’t be trained,’ said his mother.
‘Mine will be! I will make it do whatever I want for me. It will do all sorts…’

His mother turned to the server behind the counter and paid for the Warfarin before reaching down and pulling Justin behind her. What on earth was the silly boy thinking?

A kitten indeed?

As if there were not enough problems already in her life! Spoiled brat! Always got whatever he wanted on a whim, the father could be blamed for that! Justin’s mother smiled grimly to herself as she contemplated the future for her boy.

He would just have to learn that sometimes he could not always have what he wanted…
