The Lantern by Ernst Gerhard
Ernst Gerhard (1867–1948) was a very obscure artist. All we know about him is that he was born in Landau in south-west Germany, worked mostly in Munich, and exhibited in the Great Berlin Art Exhibition of 1909.
This portfolio of ten etchings is the only known erotic artwork that Gerhard ever produced. The Lantern (1925) is thematically unified around the idea of what would be revealed by various acts brought to light. What once might have been hidden in the dark is revealed by the light source prominent in every plate.
While not unrepresentative of the social and sexual life of Wiemar Germany, this portfolio was banned in Leipzig in 1927, in Munich in 1929 and in Berlin in 1932. In 1936 it was listed in the Polunbi (Polizeipräsidium zur Unzüchtiger Bilder) catalogue of banned books by the Nazi regime.
